Nintendo announced three new New Nintendo 2DS XL system variants releasing in Japan later this year, with no announcement being made in North America at the time of this writing.
First, Nintendo is releasing a new Red/Black variant of the New Nintendo 2DS XL in Japan that includes a pre-installed copy of Mario Kart 7. Released in 2011, Mario Kart 7 is one of the Nintendo 3DS’s most popular titles, even being included with most Nintendo 2DS systems since it’s launch in 2013.
Mojang’s Minecraft is also receiving the New Nintendo 2DS XL treatment, especially special considering that the company is owned by Microsoft. Dubbed the New Nintendo 2DS XL Minecraft Creeper Edition, the blocky-green handheld features a design of the “Creeper” and appears to have raised edges to give it an authentic feel. While the Nintendo 3DS/2DS version of Minecraft isn’t compatible with Microsoft and Nintendo’s cross-platform feature, it is a nice treat for Minecraft fans. This Nintendo 2DS XL also includes a preinstalled version of Minecraft: New Nintendo 3DS Edition, so fans should feel right at home with the system.
Last, but certainly not least, is a treat for Animal Crossing Fans. Featuring an embossed Animal Crossing logo, complete with the series’ leaf embedded in the middle of the system, Nintendo is releasing a New Nintendo 2DS XL Animal Crossing Edition in Japan in the coming months. This system includes a copy of Animal Crossing: New Leaf, complete with amiibo compatibility.
Right now, there is no word on if these will make it overseas to North America, but we are hoping that they do. All three systems, even the Red/Black variant look stunning and we are envious we don’t reside in Japan ourselves. If they don’t make it overseas, will you be importing one for yourself? Let us know in the comments below!
The New Nintendo 2DS XL is available at select retailers.
