Soon, Nintendo will require a paid, online subscription to enjoy many of their titles’ online features as the Nintendo Switch Online Service arrives on September 18th, 2018.
At launch, Nintendo is offering a free 7-day trial to all Nintendo Switch owners, so anyone can hop on and try the Switch’s online features. These features include the ability to play games online, backup saves to the cloud, and unlimited access to Nintendo’s NES titles for the Nintendo Switch.
Thankfully, the service is quite inexpensive. Monthly subscriptions for the service run for $3.99 USD, while subscribers can opt in for 3-Months at $7.99 USD, or a year for $19.99 USD. Nintendo also offers a family plan for $34.99 USD/year. Subscribers on the family plan can share their subscription with up to seven other people, saving costs for the entire group.
Those purchasing a copy of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in December will need a Nintendo Switch Online subscription in order to play the game online. The same goes for Nintendo’s many other titles such as Arms, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2, and more. What are your thoughts on the paid subscription? Are you picking it up?
