For the first time ever in the show’s history, Sony appears to be opting out of E3 2019.
An announcement was made by the Electronic Software Association (via Variety), who confirmed that Sony’s biggest competitors, Nintendo and Microsoft, would be in attendance for the show. What’s surprising is there is no mention of Sony, one of the show’s biggest vendors. This means that Sony is either still preparing their E3 presence, or that they are choosing to opt-out of a traditional show.
Regularly, the company hosts a press conference, then brings a wide variety of software to the show floor. Sony’s E3 2018 presentation saw trailers for their major exclusive titles including The Last of Us 2, Death Stranding, Ghost of Tsushima, and Marvel’s Spider-Man.
If the news is true, this could spell out big trouble for E3’s future, as several other companies have already chosen to host their own events away from the Los Angeles Convention. Several publishers have already opted to hold their own events, such as Electronic Arts’ EA Play, usually scheduled during E3’s show floor.
