The first PS Plus games for 2019 arrived in the store yesterday, and while they probably won’t be turning heads, there is something unique about this offering. There’s a bit of sports, some rhythm, a healthy dose of action and even a free pack for those who are playing Warframe; it’s a little gift bag with a touch of everything. I think a sort of sampling of from such disparate genres is a perfect way to start the new year, even if none of the games given are outstanding on their own. The titles are as follows:
Playstation 4
– Steep
– Portal Knights
Playstation 3
– Zone of the Enders HD Collection
– Amplitude
Playstation Vita
– Fallen Legion: Flames of Rebellion
– Super Mutant Alien Assault (which is also a Cross Buy with the PS4)
Steep is an extreme sports game (skiing, snowboarding, paragliding and wing-suit flying) with a focus on Online Multiplayer. Developed by Ubisoft Annecy, it’s an open-world game that can be played in either 1st or 3rd-person perspectives, dependent on the player’s preference. This game alone should give at least a few hours of downhill fun.
Portal Knights is an independent survival-action role-playing game, developed by Keen Games and published by 505 Games. It utilizes a sandbox environment, in which the players build, explore and fight. It is similar in style to the mega-hit Minecraft, but has only “mixed or average” reviews on Metacritic. It’s a great one for those who just want to relax.
Zone of the Enders HD Collection is a science-fiction based action game, the HD versions of which were developed by High Voltage Software and published by Konami. If you are a fan of anime, mecha, or Hideo Kojima himself, you should enjoy this game.
Amplitude is a music game developed by Harmonix, y’know, the same guys who brought us Rock Band. The game is based off of its Playstation 2 release, but not because of the reception from critics. The player controls a ship across six tracks, each denoting a musical instrument, and shoots at “note gems” in time with the music.
Fallen Legion: Flames of Rebellion is an action role-playing game in which the choices a player makes can impact the world around them. It was developed by YummyYummyTummy and as of this moment has only a single review on Metacritic (a 67).
Finally, Super Mutant Alien Assault is an arcade platform shooter developed by Cybernate. The player fights through a dozen “rapid fire single screen levels with a random combination of platform layout, objectives, vending machines and enemies”. It also sits at a 67 on Metacritic.
For those who play Warframe (a 3rd-person action arcade shooter), Sony is also giving away a free Booster Pack (PS Plus Booster Pack III), which will assist the player in “streamlining” their experience by allowing them to add new weapons, equipment or “Warframes”.
So there you have them. No matter what style of game you are into, there should be something to hold your attention for a few minutes, at least until the packed month of February comes around.
