Nintendo has been on a roll with their popular characters this generation. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild redefined what an open-world game was, and could do. Super Mario Odyssey kept the tight, responsive game-play the plumber’s games have been known for while adding Cappy, a strange but ultimately fitting (no pun intended) character. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate gave the fans (almost) every character they could possibly want and even Donkey Kong and Captain Toad found their latest adventures ported from the Wii U. Now, it looks like Nintendo is setting their sites on another beloved character– Yoshi.
In this new iteration, Yoshi’s Crafted World, Nintendo follows the same style of aesthetic as Kirby’s Epic Yarn, or Paper Mario, only this time it’s based on a broader “Arts and Crafts” theme. In the trailer, there are parts of the background that look to be construction paper rolled into cone shapes and taped in place, paper sections with the writing still visible and buttons. As for Yoshi himself, he appears to be made of wool, much like in his last adventure, Yoshi’s Woolly World, on the Wii U.
The game is another 2D platformer, but with a slight twist– as Nintendo states on their website, “on the flip side, stages can be played backwards, providing new perspectives to explore…“. It will feature multiplayer, with the second player taking control of a fellow, differently-hued Yoshi. Nintendo has also decided to include what they termed a “Mellow mode [that] gives Yoshi wings for a breezier experience…“, and finally, Yoshi’s Crafted World will feature handicraft costumes for Yoshi to wear for “extra protection“.
Yoshi’s Crafted World will release on March 29, 2019 for the Nintendo Switch. You can see the Story trailer below.
