Have you ever wondered what it would be like if a Zelda game had survival elements? More than The Legend of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, I mean. Well, soon you’ll see what it would be like to try to survive in a world not unlike The Legend of Zelda: Windwaker. That includes cel-shaded boat-sailing and harnessing the power of the wind to your advantage.
Deep Silver have announced their new IP, and it may surprise some; the developers, 5 Lives Studios, showed off what they have been working on: Windbound. The protagonist, Kara, gets separated from her fleet while sailing into a strange storm, and awakens on a shore.
This shore is a small segment of an archipelago, the breadth of which you will be exploring during the game. If you are intrigued by the sound of it, you won’t have to wait long. You can check out the trailer below:
In an interesting attempt at realism in a game so “bright”, the player will be forced to focus on mere survival first. With their needs are taken of, they can move on to better, more interesting things. Things like the history of those who once lived there, and the relationship they had with the sea that surrounded them.
The player will have to craft ways to stay afloat in order to survive. They can start with things like grass canoes, before building their way up to boats with multiple sails. The different islands will host their own flora and fauna, with different resources available. No two playthroughs will be the same, as it is all procedurally generated.
Get ready to “explore as far as the eye can see” when Windbound releases August 28th, 2020. It will be on the Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
