A Viking diaspora is the setting for the Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Vikings are popular at the moment, and I can see why. Ever since I first learned of the infamous raiders, I was intrigued; the concept of Valhalla, characters like Odin, Thor and Loki, both Jormungandr and Fenrir. It can all make for great stories, as evidenced by the reboot of God of War and the popularity of the show Vikings. A Viking diaspora is the setting for the Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.
Assassin’s Creed’s new entry may not have the fantastical elements to the extent that God of War does. But it doesn’t need to. Assassin’s Creed does best with real history and a slight mixing of myth. With the team behind two of the better entries (Ubisoft Montreal, who made Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag and Assassin’s Creed Origins), players can expect a large open world.
Pillage the Villages…
Ubisoft showed off the first trailer today. It’s set in England’s Dark Ages (9th Century), a “time when Norse tribes were leaving their homes in Scandinavia.” This transition is where the game takes place, with the player starting a new settlement in the “fractured kingdoms known as Anglo-Saxon England.” Like the last game, the player will have a choice between a male and female protagonist, this time named Eivor. Branching dialogue and decisions that alter the story will also be making a return.
A new combat system lets you “bash, dismember, and decapitate your foes,” with a new dual-wield mechanic. But murder may not be the way to go, as “diplomacy will likely make you more friends than brute force”. There will be more customization for the player, since things like hair, tattoos, war paint, clothes, and gear will be available as the player expands their settlement. All decisions will influence the outcome of the story, so players should think twice about every action.
The game will release cross-gen as well as cross-platform Holiday 2020. However, there is much more to look into. There are multiple versions, including the Standard Edition, Gold Edition, Ultimate Edition, and Collector’s Edition, and a pre-0rder bonus of an additional mission at launch. Finally, there will also be an original novel that goes further into the world of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. It will be available at around the same time.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will release on PC (exclusively on both the Epic Store and the Ubisoft Store, as well as UPlay+, Ubisoft’s subscription service), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Stadia, Xbox One and Xbox Series X in Holiday 2020.
