Headup Studios has announced that Outbuddies DX, a Love Letter to Metroidvania, will be launching soon on Nintendo Switch and Xbox One.
Over the course of long seven years, the game was developed by Julian Laufer, and was first released on Steam and GOG in October 2019. OutbuddiesDX is a feature-packed otherworldly 2D adventure that carries on the spirit of games such as ‘Metroid’.
The game is set deep in an Ocean that is infested with not only hostile Lovecraftian creatures, but lethal environmental hazards as well. Players must fight their way through a danger-filled sunken fortress of the Old Gods called Bahlam.
You will have a ‘Buddy unit’ that is able manipulate and scout the surroundings through hacking, scanning and telekinesis. This allows the players to discover mysterious ancient weapon systems and gear upgrades to battle through Bahlam. Outbuddies DX features a local co-op to control Buddy with an expanded tool set.
Outbuddies DX for both combat and level-layouts offers a nonlinear gear-based progression system. You are able to select weapons from a four-tier upgrade system, as well as split-second reflexes and memorisation of attack patterns. These are essential for players to defeat the onslaught of enemies and to escape Bahlam.
Outbuddies‘ praised atmosphere is supported by OGRE’s oldschool soundtrack written in to pay an ode to the 16-bit Megadrive/Genesis era.
“This is my favourite Metroid-me-do since Axiom Verge … I’ve had a very splendid time with this, and have much splendid time left with it. A proper fine achievement, and a game worthy of measuring against the mighty Metroid.”Rock Paper Shotgun
“It is games like Outbuddies that remind me of why I choose indie games over AAA.”9/10 The Video Game Autopsy
“It was well worth the wait: The skillfully crafted title puts back the focus on exploration with one of the most impressive level-designs of the genre!“Gazette of Independent Gaming
