On June 11th, Sony held their first look at what the PlayStation 5 will offer. While it can’t be claimed as a complete success, the show definitely did have some surprises. For a complete success, in my book, there would have been another God of War. Also, anything to do with Silent Hill. It might still happen, as according to Sony, the reveals at the show aren’t all they have up their sleeves. On top of the likes of Ratchet & Clank and Spider-Man, Sony has decided to bring back one series that hasn’t had a game since 2014, Oddworld.
Oddworld: Soulstorm, announced for the upcoming PlayStation 5, is the first title in 15 years, and it looks to continue the strangeness that made the original games so endearing. The developers, Oddworld Inhabitants, claim that the “Soulstorm‘s scope and scale are larger than [they] have tackled before.” The game looks to keep the “fun and challenging” action-platforming the series is known for. However, it also will use “HOPE as an overriding philosophy”, alongside the irony one would expect from Oddworld.
In Soulstorm, the player will start where New ‘n’ Tasty left off. Based on a Scavenger’s Economy, the player will loot lockers, trash and pick pockets to create weapons. For those who prefer the original style of stealth and problem-solving, it will remain as an option. The developers have also added “light RPG elements, leader boards, trophies…and a progression system,” in a bid to really bring Oddworld into the new era.
The Lanning hopes they can continue what was originally dubbed a “quintology”, or a series of 5. It’s been in the plans since the 1990’s but still has 3 games before its finished; Munch’s Odyssey and Stranger’s Wrath are not considered part of that 5. Oddworld: Soulstorm will release on PlayStation 5, though no actual release date has been set. There is also no word on whether it will come to any other platforms.
