Are you a military shooter fan but don’t have a PC? Have you been yearning for (yet) another online FPS game? Were games like Apex Legends and Valorant not grounded enough for you? Well, Smilegate Entertainment have just the thing for you. During Microsoft’s Xbox Series X showing, they showed a “new” entry into the genre, at least where consoles are concerned; the CrossfireX campaign trailer was revealed.
Remedy and Smilegate
There is about as much information to go by as any other game showcased during the event (besides Halo Infinite), which means not a heck of a lot. CrossfireX, originally released on PC, will be coming to the Xbox Series X as an exclusive. Hence the X at the end of the name.
Where CrossfireX really earns its stripes is in the development– the original developers Smilegate Entertainment are taking care of the online portion. However, Remedy (developers of Control and Alan Wake) will be working on the single-player story mode.

The collaboration came about when Smilegate Entertainment reached out to Remedy for their expertise in story-telling. How could Remedy turn down the chance to create a narrative for “the world’s most-played video game” by player count? It has a lifetime total of over 1 billion players in 80 countries.
In the game, there is a war between two large military factions: the Global Risk team, or the Black List team. The story mode will show the conflict from both sides while also giving context to the crazier aspects of the online world. The single-player aspect will contain “operations” that are divvied up into multiple episodes each. There is no indication of whether it will be an episodic or single-day release. The game itself will remain as free-to-play.
With the CrossfireX campaign trailer revealed, the release date couldn’t be far behind. There are no specifics, but their website has a general date of 2020.
