The year, 2600. The Earth, abandoned for lack of food. You? An adorable sentient sapling created in a lab as the last hope for humanity. I mean, what?! Incoming puzzle-platformer from Nerd Game Studios, Slider Games, and EastAsiaSoft. Get ready for the cuteness, because 112th Seed jumps onto consoles this week.
The trailer gives a very brief summary of the stories plot, and I feel like that’s all we need. It’s the future, earth is starving, you’re a seed who can solve it all. I could be told, “You’re a plant, you jump around trying to get from room to room. The End.” and that would be sufficient. The main drawing point here is the gameplay, and that’s what they show.
For the record, I keep thinking I’m sick of pixel art platformers, but the next one comes along and I’m immediately in love with the art. The seed’s expressions are adorable, and the colours used fit the future sci-fi theme. The visual window is small enough that there don’t need to be a tonne of froufrou tossed about that could be distracting.
The level size of 112th Seed is deliberately small to encourage pick up and play sessions that don’t have to be exceedingly grind-y. Hop in, make some progress, hop out. Yes, I used ‘hop’ on purpose there. Don’t judge me. There are over 70 levels with increasing difficulty as you try to save the remaining 3 scientists on earth.
112th Seed will be available digitally worldwide for $4.99 USD. It will be available July 29th, 2020 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
