With Halloween right around the corner, games are looking to capitalize on horror properties. Mortal Kombat, while not horror, has always had a close relation to the genre. The buckets of blood that spray across the screen; the X-Ray attacks and Fatalities that give movies like Saw a challenge in brutality; fighters and creatures like Baraka, Scorpion or Goro that make up its roster.
The games have even gone so far as to feature Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Leatherface and the Xenomorph. So to say Mortal Kombat has horror elements is like saying it has a bit of blood. Now, Mortal Kombat 11 will add new characters and upgrades for its players.
80’s Nostalgia
Starting off with a bang, the new trailer shows two fighters from older Mortal Kombat games: Mileena and Rain. Rain is similar to Scorpion or Sub-Zero, only he controls water as opposed to fire and ice, respectively. Mileena is the “Twin” (ie a magical clone) of Katana, who was formed using the body of a Tarkatan warrior.
While it mostly worked, she was left with the oversized maw of the Tarkatans. Then, in an even bigger surprise, NetherRealm announced the third fighter in the pack– John Rambo. Better yet, he is actually voiced by Sylvester Stallone himself! It also means you can finally see who would win between a T-800, Robocop and Rambo. Don’t pretend you haven’t wanted that.
As for the upgrades, they also announced that all players will receive a free upgrade for Mortal Kombat 11 to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. As of November 17th, 2020, anyone who has bought the game and has one of the new systems will be able to play it there.
The game will have “visual enhancements, 4k resolution, and reduced load times”. It will also have cross-platform play, and even cross-generation play for select modes! The only places this will not work is PC and the Nintendo Switch. If you pre-order the Kombat Pack (which will be bundled together with everything else into an Ultimate pack), you will also get new skins for Noob Saibot, Liu Kang, and Skarlet.
The fighting must continue as Mortal Kombat 11 adds new characters and upgrades. The new fighters and Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate will release on October 15th, 2020 for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. For PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, the game will be available digitally on November 17th, 2020 while physical copies will release in January 2021.
