Has the pandemic kept you feeling land-locked? Do you miss the constant motion of a ship at sail and the spray of the briny in your face? While there are a few options out there when it comes to sea-faring voyages, a new barge is on the way. Hearken, for Call of the Sea‘s release date beckons.
Touted as a first-person adventure game, it takes place in the 1930’s on islands of the South Pacific. The player controls Norah in a quest to find her missing husband. However, one of the features is a lack of one–there is no combat. Instead, players will solve puzzles to advance the plot and gain answers.
Call of the Sea is the debut title for developers Out of the Blue from Madrid, Spain and is made up of about a dozen people. It’s also yet another game inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft. But Tatiana Delgado, the founder, has said it “isn’t a descent into madness, but a rise to sanity”.
When it comes to H.P. Lovecraft’s inspiration, Out of the Blue only used the “surreal” and “oneiric” that he was so great at creating in his writing. In other words, this is NOT a horror game. Meanwhile, Cissy Jones brings her voice to the character of Norah. Some may know her work as both Delilah in Firewatch and a small role in Half-Life: Alyx.
The puzzles themselves consist of exploring the island and combining such discoveries as notes, photos, and other various objects. The gameplay looks to bring back adventure games of old like Myst, with static (but usually beautiful) environments and a focus on sometimes-obtuse puzzling.
