So far there isn’t a lot of horror set to release on next-generation consoles. The Xbox Series X/S has Scorn and The Medium, PlayStation 5 has Ghostwire: Tokyo, and Capcom has Resident Evil Village. But that’s about it. So colour me pleased to discover that Martha is Dead will also release on PlayStation 5.
Developed by LKA, the game will take place in World War II Italy. While already announced for the other systems, the release for PlayStation 5 was just revealed at the Golden Joystick Awards. It will be the second game the Florence-based studio will have set in Italy.
A History of Horror
Interestingly, the game’s development is co-funded by the European Union. It’s a part of the Creative Europe Programme and looks to real-world locations and a rich narrative for its scares, using “LKA’s signature style of deep multi-layered narratives combined with real locations and a mix of history, superstition and psychological distress.”
In other words, it’s a psychological thriller. The player controls the twin sister of a murder victim; as the daughter of a German soldier, she must deal with the aftermath of it alone. Worse yet, the murder is “shrouded by mysterious folklore and the extreme horror of war which draws ever closer.”
The trailer itself is also unique. It cuts back and forth between a puppet show backstory and segments of gameplay. The atmosphere looks to be suitably dreary and weary, with some great next-gen graphics. Horror games rely on lighting, and Martha is Dead looks to utilize it well.
While there is no release date, it is slated for a 2021 release date across PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. Until then, you can try their other horror game The Town of Light on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
