The Coalition’s Gears of War 4 will feature micro-transactions when it is released this October.
Players will be able to purchase crates using in-game currency or real world money. Each crate will include a bundle of cards which are used to unlock a variety of multiplayer skins. All of the microtransactions will be based on cosmetic items, therefore taking out the ‘pay-to-win’ requirement that some games feature.
The Coalition’s Rod Fergusson told Gamespot “I feel like that paradigm of cards is really clear to understand for collectibles, like the ability to collect things. We had weapon skins and character skins, so that idea of collecting cards is just easily understood. It felt like it added some engagement in terms of its not the, ‘Oh, I like Tiger Stripe. I bought Tiger Stripe. I’m done. I don’t need to engage with that system anymore. There’s no need for me to hang around.'”
According to Rod Fergusson, this micro-transaction system is inspired by the likes of Blizzard’s Hearthstone or Wizards of the Coast’s Magic The Gathering. This philosophy closely follows the same system that Halo 5: Guardians has in place, by purchasing REQ Packs to unlock a variety of different armor and skins for use in-game.
Gears of War 4 is scheduled to launch exclusively for the Xbox One on October 21st, 2016. The Gears of War 4 multiplayer beta will be launching on April 18th, 2016 for those who own a copy of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition for Xbox One or PC.
