The neo-nostalgic ‘RetroVania’ Narita Boy from developers Team17 and Studio Koba is coming to PC, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One.
Players will be transported to the Digital Kingdom, as they seek to master and wield the trichroma Techno-Sword. After all, that’s the only way to stand any chance against HIM and the Stallions, a rogue code that has endangered and threatened the entire kingdom and its future.
The love letter to classic titles from the 1980s will provide the player with a classic gameplay style and narrative that will allow the player, once they progress through the game, to learn more about the world’s secrets and memories. The main draw of the game, the Techno-Sword, is not just a basic weapon either.
The sword is able to be combined with a mysterious magic that will allow the player to hack, slash and carve their way through almost every opponent. With a 1980s inspired game comes 1980s inspired pixel art. Players will be able to explore and engage with the vast 2D platformer as they explore the city and take in the large array of pixel art.
Not only will the game have a beautiful pixel art aesthetic, but the player will be able to interact with the weird and wonderful digitized characters as they progress through the story.
Accompanied with a retro-themed soundtrack to provide some expected backdrop, Narita Boy is hoping to capture and build upon what made these classic ‘RetroVania’ style games so much fun.
Along with being a brand-new release, Narita Boy also helps promote the ‘Saving the Arcade World’ campaign set up by both Team17 and Studio Koba. This campaign aims to help protect and preserve vintage arcade games and machines. This project is in partnership with several museums throughout the USA, UK and Spain and more information can be found about it on Team17’s website.
Narita Boy is out now on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. It is also compatible with Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 consoles. For more news on great games, keep up to date with Informed Pixel!
