Ratchet & Clank has always been a great series. It’s mix of Pixar charm, wreaking havok with strange weapons, and great voice-acting really sold the universe; luckily, the new entry looks similar as the Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart story trailer released.
Throughout the trailer, the usual chaos ensues, only this time with a dimensional aspect. Universes are crashing into each other, creating all sorts of problems. This includes the newest character addition, Rivet, a female Lombax.
…And this!
While the Story Trailer doesn’t give away too much, it appears Dr. Nefarious is up to usual “squishy”-hating antics. The already-beloved character of Captain Qwark also appears in the trailer, hinting at the same sense of humour as previous games.
But the best part is the trailer’s voice-over. A robot in the middle of electronic puberty is shrieking over the action, both annoying and humorous at the same time. When it comes to the gameplay, it looks like it doesn’t change what made the others great. Fast-paced action with bizarre guns and beautiful cartoon graphics all look to make a return.
Some of the weapons highlighted are the Shatterbomb, Burst Pistol and a Topiary Sprinkler– which may just be a futuristic watering can. As most people already know, where the real innovation comes in is with the inter-dimensional gameplay.
Ratchet can basically create portals that move him instantly from one universe to the next. moving objects or creating paths etc. The game will also take advantage of the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller (haptic feedback and adaptive triggers), alongside 3D audio and the fast loading shown off by dimension-hopping.
The game releases June 11th for the PlayStation 5 and is developed by Insomniac Games. There is also a Digital Deluxe edition available with in-game extras, an art book and a digital soundtrack.
