Microsoft has officially ended the production cycle for the Xbox 360.
Phil Spencer took to Xbox.com to announce the news this morning: “Xbox 360 means a lot to everyone in Microsoft. And while we’ve had an amazing run, the realities of manufacturing a product over a decade old are starting to creep up on us. Which is why we have made the decision to stop manufacturing new Xbox 360 consoles.”
The Xbox 360 is now just over 10 years old since it’s launch on November 22nd, 2005. Back then, the Xbox 360 had an incredible launch line-up from Rare’s Kameo and Perfect Dark Zero to Activision’s Call of Duty 2. The Xbox 360 introduced HD Gaming, the Xbox Live Arcade, and killer IP’s such as Gears of War, Crackdown and Alan Wake.
One of the problems that the Xbox 360 faced for it’s first few years was the dreaded ‘Red Ring of Death’ which plagued original Xbox 360 consoles throughout it’s lifespan. Fortunately, a newer, slimmer version of the console was released and with it, reliable hardware to help stop this issue from happening so often.
