At Ubisoft’s recent Ubisoft Forward press conference, it showed off the upcoming Cooperative shooter Rainbow Six Extraction, a spinoff to its main title, Rainbow Six Siege. The video details how the gameplay missions play alongside the importance of teamwork against a variety of enemies.
The game follows a 1-3 person squad completing PVE based missions set in a world overrun by an alien virus; the game is a direct follow up to the famous timed event Rainbow Six outbreak which fans have previously seen in Siege.
Stealth Is Key
One of the first things to notice that sets Extraction apart from its more action-focused contemporaries is the focus on tense stealth gameplay. Players need to silently take out low-level grunt aliens to avoid attracting too much attention.
Players are shown using stealth takedowns and suppressed weapons to move through without getting swarmed; on top of that, the different Archaen variants require other tactics to dispatch, with one type requiring an attack from behind, making use of the games environmental destruction.
The gameplay comprises what is referred to as incursions; these incursions contain multiple subsections, with each subsection featuring a different objective.
One of these objectives being to implant what appear to be large spores with trackers for further research; upon completion, the players are rushed by a large horde of archaeans forcing players to sprint to the nearest airlock and escape into the next subsection.
The Belly of the Beast
Players who reach the airlock will be given a brief moment of respite before heading further into the Archaean lair. Here, they will face even more formidable enemies and an objective where players need to gather samples from the particular forms of Archaean. Using stealth takedowns, players will need to use their tech to distract enemies.
As the match progresses, players are given opportunities to extract and take back what they have gained to unlock new gear or risk it all to progress further into the incursion site.
That Escalated Quickly.
It’s in the third and final subsection we see in the showcase that the true intensity of the game is highlighted with players being forced to hunt archaeans in order to draw out their strongest, this is where players will put their team’s skills to the test.
Here we see some of the games most brutal enemies; such as the brutish smasher that can only be killed by a melee strike to the back or the support class lurker that powers up lower-tier enemies. It all culminates in a team member being captured and the remaining two players needing to mount a daring rescue, complete with chaotic gunfights.
Rainbow Six Extraction looks to be an exciting entry into the co-op genre forcing players to communicate and work together against the Archaen menace.
Rainbow Six Extraction is releasing on September 16th 2021 and will be available on PlayStation 4|5 & Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S. Additionally, it’ll be available on Stadia and Microsoft windows, it will also be fully cross-play across all consoles and PC.
