Horror games are one of my favorite genres of video games; although I never play them (I’m a coward, lol), I love watching others play them, and I have discovered a lot of awesome horror games, and the first Outlast is by far my all-time favorite. So let’s dive into why Outlast is my favorite horror game!
What is Outlast? Outlast is a survival horror game set in an asylum in the Colorado mountains. You play as a reporter named Miles Upshur, who has come to document the terrifying and inhumane stuff going on with his camera.
He soon finds out the Asylum has fallen apart, most if not all the staff are dead, and the insane and deformed patients run rampant. He now has to make his way through the Asylum, surviving all the horrific and terrifying stuff inside. But, unfortunately, you cannot fight; your only options are to run, hide or die.
I discovered Outlast by watching Ray Narvaez Jr stream it back in 2014; I loved watching him play it and always rewatch the stream on Halloween; I love diving into the lore for Outlast. All the documents and notes you can get bring so much more depth into the game. The inmates that chase you are all equally terrifying and look the part too.
Outlast also has a DLC titled Whistleblower, which follows the asylum employee whistleblower what was going on to Miles via email. The DLC has you survive the beginning of all the chaos that happened in the Asylum. You have to make your way through it, dodging all kinds of new enemies and attempting to escape going through old and new locations of the Asylum!
Overall, Outlast is a fantastic game; it always keeps you on edge in the amazingly detailed Asylum. The atmosphere is incredibly eerie, very dark, and grim. The named inmates are all unique in design, sound, and backstory. It is without a doubt a high recommendation to anyone wanting to play a horror game. You can get it on Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation!
