In a seeming ode to the likes of Knight Rider and Ghostbusters– Pacific Drive centres around the player and an intelligent AI-equipped station wagon that increases in abilities and personality as the game progresses. The player must navigate their ride through government-run evacuated areas of the PNW while fending off cryptid-like creatures and anomalies.
Pacific Drive will be run-based, with the garage acting as the home base and upgrade station between runs. It will also include sections of resource gathering and spur-of-the-moment complications and obstacles requiring the driver to exit the car- during which they will be especially vulnerable.
In development since the formation of Ironwood Studios in 2019, Pacific Drive appears to be a unique mash-up of rogue-lite, survival and driving game elements. The studio affectionately refers to Pacific Drive as a “road-like” game.
Though a new studio, the staff of Ironwood Studios are certainly not new faces in the game development industry. Their team includes former members of studios such as Suckerpunch, Irrational Games and Riot Games. Coming from the minds of those with this type of experience- Pacific Drive should hopefully be a very strong first impression from the young company.
As announced at the Sony State of Play, Pacific Drive is due for release in 2023 on both Playstation 5 and PC.
