One of my favorite indie showcases is the Wholesome Games Direct. When I saw Bear & Breakfast, the very first game by newcomer developers Gummy Cat, I knew it would fill that wholesome game shaped hole in many cozy game enthusiast’s hearts. After researching the game my interest was only piqued further by the publisher Armor Games’ goal to champion promising and creative indie games.
I’m quite the animal lover, often feeling the world would be a better place if populated by anthropomorphic animals. Bear & Breakfast serves as somewhat of a reversal of the real world. You play Hank, a cuddly but sometimes misunderstood brown bear looking for positive encouragement.
Hank meets a mysterious individual in a shark suit complete with a voice box, pitching a side hustle in the form of hosting a bed and breakfast inn marketed towards humans. You and your other friendly critter friends work together to establish a group of friendly inn’s to welcome humans into your community for the first time in ages.
There is a bit of a learning curve to the controls, but once you get the hang of them- the gameplay is very smooth! In my personal experience, something that is sometimes missing from very cozy games is a sense of purpose and direction. Bear & Breakfast circumvents this issue by giving you plenty of quests to fulfill and providing directional guidance, while not rushing you by imposing time limits.
Overall, I would highly recommend Bear & Breakfast. I would compare it to Animal Crossing without running out of the satisfactory feeling of quests to complete. You can choose to do everything at your own pace- wandering & exploring, tackling quests continuously, or doing a mix of both depending on your mood!
