Last week, I wrote about everything you needed to know before the new Pokémon games were released. Now that they are out in the wild for a weekend, it’s time to look into what these games have to offer. All three story quests start on your first trip to the school about 30 min after the game starts. This is your SPOILER WARNING, as I will get into story details and end-game content.
New Pokémon: Part 2
With 103 new Pokémon added to the Pokédex, the official count is now at 1008 different species. From the steel/poison engine Varoom to the fairy/steel giant hammer wielding Tinkaton, this generation has something for everyone. Looking at the Pokédex, it’s safe to say that this game is the strongest in terms of choices. This game has almost every pseudo-legendaries from all the other generations and added two more.
The previously mentioned Tinkaton is an absolute beast with one of the strongest base attacks with a 160-power Gigaton Hammer. Baxcalibur, the second powerhouse, is a dragon/ice type with a strong base attack and high hit points. There are four mythicals in this game that require you to pull out different colored steaks hidden throughout the region. The colors are purple for Wo-Chien, yellow for Chien-Pao, green for Ting-Lu, and blue for Chi-Yu.
The one thing that most people have been wanting is the final evolution of the starters. For most people, that is how they choose which one to take. As previously mentioned, the starters were Sprigatito, Quaxly, and Fuecoco. Their final evolutions are Meowscarada, Quaquaval, and Skeledirge.
There is a new type of Pokémon introduced in these games, not unlike the ultra beasts from Sun & Moon. They are called “Paradox Pokémon,” and these Pokémon are from different points in time. Scarlet has the past paradox, while Violet has the future versions. They all are located in Area Zero and are only available after the credits roll during the end game.
Hit the Gyms
The story this time around was said to be completely open. However, contrary to rumors, you cannot do any gym or challenge in whatever order, as the levels don’t scale. So make sure you are around the same level as the Pokémon out in the wild before attempting the gym.
If you want to do the gym battles, you must first complete a little task associated with the gym. For example, the bug gym has you rolling a ball around an obstacle course into a goal. After completing the challenge, you are allowed to face the gym leader. Each leader has their gym type of Pokémon and a Tera type that matches the gym.
Make sure you are prepared, as the Tera Pokémon usually has a few moves that would be super effective against the partner you chose to fight with. The gym types are bug, grass, electric, ice, ghost, normal, water, and psychic. There is an Elite Four behind the school that has ground, steel, flying, and dragon as the types, with the champion being a true mix.
Don’t be a Star
Another story quest is the Team Star Base Raids, where you must use the first three Pokémon in your party to take on thirty or so defenders. You must throw out your attackers and let them free-fight until you reach the correct amount of defeated opponents. After which, you will face the base’s boss in a traditional battle. There are only five bases that are fire, fighting, poison, fairy, and dark, and you get a badge after defeating each one.
After defeating the bosses, you must have one final battle against the Big Boss………………… Penny! That’s right; Penny was the boss behind Team Star this whole time. Once you defeat her, the quest ends, and a long cutscene wraps up everyone’s story.
Attack on Titan Pokémon
The third storyline is all about a boy and his dog. Arven approaches you and asks that you help him look for special herbs around the region. Once you reach an area that has one, it is shown that the herb is protected by a very large titan Pokémon. You must defeat the titan twice to gain access to the herb. The first time is a normal battle, but the second time, the titan eats some herb and gets stronger, so Arven joins you to help battle.
Once you find the herb, Arven makes you a sandwich with it that you end up feeding your riding Pokémon. Doing so will grant special abilities that will help maneuver around Paldea much easier. The new abilities are dash, surf, high jump, climb, and glide. You also discover that Arven is doing this to gather the herbs to help his dog, Mabosstiff, get better after an injury left the dog in poor shape.
There are only five titans that you need to defeat with the titan types rock, flying, “dragon” (water), ground, and steel. Once you defeat the titans, you must go to the lighthouse by your hometown and discover that the Pokémon Professor is Arven’s parent. They need you to bring a book down to the bottom of the crater.
After a battle with Arven, you will find him at the entrance to the crater. That is where the story ends, but in order to enter the crater, you must finish the other two storylines to get Penny and Nemona to help you two decent the depths.
Random Details
The multiplayer aspect of this game is much better than is Sword & Shield. You can fly anywhere you want and catch whatever Pokémon you want in another trainer’s world. So even if you have Violet, you can still catch a Tyranitar. Mass outbreaks are back from Legends Arceus so expect that to come up when shiny hunting. In order to get an egg, you must have two compatible Pokémon in your party and then set up a picnic. Eventually, an egg will show up in the basket, so no more daycares.
If you’ve played any of the other Switch Pokémon games and still have the save file, you can get special Rotom phone cases from a lady in Mesagoza. You can keep going to class for lessons and to take test. If you pass the tests, you get experience candies to help level your team. Visit all the Poké Centers as soon as you can to be able to fast travel quickly.
