Good news for those feeling nostalgia for their sleepless nights spent playing Dead Space in their younger years- the wait for the remake is officially over. Today, the Necromorphs return! The original Dead Space was released in 2008 by EA Redwood Shores (later known as Visceral Games).
This iteration of the game is brought to us by EA and developer Motive Studio. Motive Studio is most well known for its work on Star Wars titles, having developed both Star Wars Battlefront II and Star Wars: Squadrons. Dead Space represents Motive Studio’s first foray into non-Star Wars territory.
Dead Space is set in the year 2508 and finds humankind on the brink of extinction after depleting much of their earthly resources, driving them to colonize and harvest other planets. Protagonist Isaac Clarke is an engineer whose girlfriend, Nicole, has gone missing. Nicole was the Chief Medical Officer on a ship called the Ishimura, which was on an illegal mining mission at Aegis VII, but never returned.
Isaac sets out with an entire crew aboard the Kellion on a mission to determine what happened to The USG Ishimura and its crew. Things go awry while the crew attempts to dock the Kellion on the Ishimura, leading to an attack by Necromorphs- a mutated corpse creature. The Kellion is destroyed, wiping out almost Isaac’s entire crew. This attack leaves only Isaac, security officer Zach and computer technician Kendra.
Through audio and video logs, Isaac begins to unravel exactly what happened to the Ishimura crew, discovering that the mining operation was truly meant to find and retrieve; The Red Marker for a cult-like religious group called Unitology, which worships the enigmatic alien artefacts. Isaac must investigate what went wrong while attempting to avoid further Necromorph attacks and work with his crewmates to repair the Ishimura to escape Aegis VII.
The Dead Space remake is available now on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X&S. If you enjoyed this piece, please feel free to follow the writer Deemarie on Twitter for similar content.
