Yesterday Square Enix dropped some exciting news- Turn-based JRPG Adventure game Live A Live will be released for PS4, PS5, and PC very soon!
Live A Live was released in 1994 for the Super Famicom console, exclusively in Japan. Despite receiving ports to both Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, Live A Live remained exclusive to Japan until just recently, in 2022, when a remake was released for Nintendo Switch.
Having recently started playing through the Octopath Traveler games, I can say with certainty that it seems they’re very much a spiritual successor of sorts to Live A Live. This is not a coincidence either- Team Asano, the team behind the Octopath Traveler games, was also in charge of bringing the 2022 remake of Live a Live to fruition. Team Asano also specifically included Live A Live director Takashi Tokita in the special thanks section on Octopath Traveler 2.
Takashi Tokita set out wanting to create a game that would tell the stories of multiple “main” characters, all with different inspirations, woven into one overarching adventure. Each of Live A Live’s seven protagonists has a unique style, backstory, and goals. In fact, each character even had their own dedicated manga artist specifically assigned to establish their individuality.
The game is broken down into eight distinct chapters, with each of the first seven chapters representing not only a single character but a single distinct setting- prehistoric, ancient Chinese, feudal Japanese, Wild West, present day, near future, and distant future. The final chapter does not feature a new character but truly ties each of the characters, stories, and settings together in the Middle Ages.
For anyone who’s been eagerly anticipating Live A Live‘s arrival on non-Nintendo consoles, the good news is that the wait is almost over! Square Enix has announced that Live A Live will officially come to life on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC on April 27th!
