We have come to June’s most anticipated release with Final Fantasy XVI. It has been seven years since we got the last new installment to the franchise, leaving some fans wondering if it was going to come at all. Alas, after trailers and an admittedly great demo, Final Fantasy is back and it looks like another great installment.
Call of the Fantasy
The story follows the protagonist Clive Rosfield as he uncovers the mystery of who killed his brother. When Clive was only fifteen, he became the First Shield of Rosario and was tasked with protecting the realms Dominant. This Dominant could call upon the power of the Phoenix and transform into the creature in order to do battle. Clive was blessed with some of the Phoenix’s power and granted special skills.
This Dominant also happened to be Clive’s little brother, who will one day rule the kingdom of Rosaria when he comes of age. During a pre-war gathering, the encampment was infiltrated by empire assassins that killed most of the soldiers. They were attempting to capture the Phoenix, but a mysterious second fire Eikon attacked and eventually killed the Phoenix.
Now forced to be a part of the frontlines of the empire’s army, Clive is rescued by Cid who has him join his outlaw gang. With the dream of building a world where Dominants are no longer exploited – this group must now take on all the kingdoms, travel the world, and discover what really is going on with the mother crystals.
Swords and Magic
This is the culmination of action RPGs with fast action and smooth battle flow. Each battle grades you on how you use your skills and combos during the combat to give rewards at the end. The more special things you do, the better your rewards can be.
Every battle gives you points that you can then spend on skills. As you progress through the game, you’ll gain access to more Eikon powers that you can swap around during combat. As you fight, press the L2 button to completely change your powers and skills. This grants you freedom during battles that previous games lacked.
Final Fantasy XVI is now available exclusively on PlayStation 5. Are you picking this up? Let us know what you think over on our Twitter and Instagram. While you are here, check out our breakdown of the Star Wars: Outlaws gameplay.
