Square Enix added more depth to the constantly growing Final Fantasy XV universe today by announcing a new retro-themed action RPG for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. As the trailer below shows, A King’s Tale: Final Fantasy XV takes place in a fictitious 30 years before the main title and follows King Regis and pals as they battle evil throughout the kingdom.
Square Enix says the game looks to connect modern gaming to the series’ retro roots. While the game uses a retro art style and side scrolling mechanics, the rest of the gameplay is inspired by modern gaming.
“The in-depth combat system blends intense attacks, devastating magic, mighty summons and unique companion attacks into a singular gaming experience through three diverse locations in the world of FINAL FANTASY XV,” Square Enix writes about the game’s announcement.
The announcement of A King’s Tale is yet another expansion of the Final Fantasy XV universe and joins an anime series, feature length movie and mobile game.
A King’s Tale: Final Fantasy XV will release alongside Final Fantasy XV on Sept. 30, 2016. A King’s Tale can be picked up for free by preordering Final Fantasy XV at select retailers.
