As part of Nintendo’s Direct at E3 2021, we got one of the best reveals anyone could ask for; Advance Wars is back! In the form of Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp, the game is heading to Nintendo Switch later this year.
Advance Wars is a real time strategy game that spawned sequels and spin-offs in its heyday. However, fans will be happy to know that this new reboot will combine the first two games into a single package. Rest assured, this is not just a simple reskin, the game has been developed from the ground up for old and new fans alike.
So, what is Advance Wars?
Simply put, the game gives you control of one faction as you put your troops (and vehicles) against enemy troops in single or multiplayer fashion. Ultimately, the idea is to take down the enemy base whilst securing buildings, and battling the opposition along the way. And yet, with such a simple premise, it really is a lot of fun.
You start off small by controlling ground troops, and slowly but surely advance to vehicles. By the end of the campaign you should have become a master of combating with infantry, vehicles, ships and air units. Securing enemy buildings and properties as you progress to the enemy main base strengthens your position, so strategize on how you want to tackle your map.
Take control of Andy, Sami, Max and supplementary Commanding Officers (Cos) as you progress through the campaign. Using your unique and individual CO abilities, feel free to see which playstyle works best for you. For example, Andy repairs units and Sami boosts troop abilities. However, do remember that your opponents also have their own CO abilities, so expect some twists and turns in each battle.
There is also a Verses mode where up to four players can battle it out. Play against the AI or against your friends to see who comes out on top. The game is attractive to newcomers and has a brilliant learning curve to go from Novice to Expert rapidly.
War never changes…. But Advance Wars does
The last time we saw a new Advance Wars game was in 2008 with Advance Wars: Days of Ruin. This is when the visuals and tone of the series took a turn from cutesy and bright sprites to a darker and sinister tone. Yes, we have had other games before and after the Advance Wars series, namely Famicom Wars in 1988 and Battalion Wars for Nintendo Wii and GameCube, but Advance Wars is arguably the more accessible of the bunch.
Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is being released in December 3rd, 2021 and pre-orders are now live.
