If this news is any indication, it could be a strange future for Atari. They are already attempting to put another Atari console in people’s homes with updated features like Bluetooth and 4K resolution. But at least that’s in their wheelhouse; their new announcement is out of digital left-field, though it certainly is interesting.
Atari announced on January 27, 2020 that they will open a new line of hotels in 8 American cities. I know what you’re thinking– is this the Atari that had such ubiquitous games as Pac-Man, E.T.– The Extra Terrestrial, and Custer’s Revenge? Yes, that Atari. They have partnered with GSD Group (a strategy agency) “to build video-game themed Atari Hotels… with the first location breaking ground in Phoenix, Arizona.”
Atari’s website describes it as “a unique lodging experience combining the iconic brand with a one-of-a-kind video-game destination.” These hotels will “create immersive experiences for every age and ability, including the latest in VR and AR (Virtual and Augmented Reality).” Select ones will also play host to e-sports events and will feature venues for said events. As for the look? They want a “retro and nostalgic meets modern” aesthetic, something the Atari console itself should easily play into (pun intended).
Once the hotel in Phoenix has been built, they are looking to expand into 7 more cities– Austin, Chicago, Denver, Las Vegas, San Francisco, San Jose, and Seattle. So if you are someone who likes your retro video games, you may want to check it out. Until then, their Atari VCS console is set to release this March after a series of delays.
