Happy Juice Games announced that their award-winning cozy (but off the wall) adventure game Lost in Play would be released soon on both Google Play and Apple App Store.
Noticeable from the very get-go is the amount of inspiration that Lost in Play very obviously takes most of its inspiration from cartoons and the whimsical fantasy of childhood, which is to say- most of it. The game feels like your childhood cartoons come to life while tying in some more modern beloved cartoons. The characters and story have a touch of added absurdity and humour similar to the likes of Adventure Time, while the animation and overall art designs are often reminiscent of Gravity Falls and Over the Garden Wall. Taking inspiration from some more recent cartoons which have managed to find a loving audience in adults only furthers the “for all ages” vibe of the game as a whole.
Brother and sister duo Toto and Gal are two imaginative young siblings who spend their days immersed in fantasy lands but eventually find themselves stuck there. Toto and Gal, who seem to have the familiar warm but sometimes adversarial sibling relationship, are forced to team up to find their way home by helping kooky sidekicks such as trolls and an entire cast of anthropomorphic animals. Toto and Gal do encounter enemies, but these characters never cross the line to truly horrifying, keeping this a fun and family-friendly adventure.
Notably, this game is completely wordless. Both playable and non-playable characters speak but in a gibberish language similar to Simlish or the sounds made by Animal Crossing characters. Instead, the game moves the player forward through on-screen prompts consisting of arrows and images which appear in bubbles on the screen. Most of the time, these prompts are fairly straightforward. However, should the player have any trouble deciphering what to do next, the game also provides the option to provide additional hints at any time needed. Some people may see the choice to completely leave dialogue or text out of the game as odd, but this can certainly be an upside to those who are visual learners, and the alternative forms of communication keep the game accessible to many.
Lost in Play was originally released on both PC and Nintendo Switch last year, receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews from both players and critics. The game went on to win awards at the DevGamm and Indiecade awards while also becoming a finalist at the DICE Awards and a nominee at the Golden Joystick Awards. Across the board, Lost in Play has been most notably praised and recognized for its bright and alluring visual design.
Happy Juice Games have announced that Lost in Play will receive a mobile release on both Google Play Store and Apple App Store on July 12th! For those who prefer other consoles, Lost in Play is already available on Steam and Nintendo Switch!
