During the EA Play 2021 event, Dice showed off Battlefield 2042‘s secret third mode! It’s called “Battlefield Portal“, and it’s bringing classic games back in a unique, mind-shattering way! The best part is that its focus is on user-created levels and community interaction!
Battlefield Portal is a vast creative toolset that will allow the player to build their own experiences. At launch, the mode will feature maps, weapons, vehicles and more from Battlefield 1942, Battlefield Bad Company 2, Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 2042! Yes, they can all be blended for some genuinely insane gameplay opportunities.
Iconic Maps
The classic maps ‘Battle of the Bulge’ and ‘EL Alamein’ Battlefield 1942 returns, alongside ‘Arica Harbor’ and ‘Valparais’ from Bad Company 2. In addition, fan-favourite maps ‘Caspian Border’ and ‘Noshahr Canals’ from Battlefield 3 also make a return alongside all of the maps from 2042!
All of these maps, including the classic ones, will support up to 128-players on next-gen consoles and PC! Meanwhile, Xbox One and Playstation 4 will only support up to the standard 64-players.
Mix & Match
Conquest, Rush and Team Deathmatch seem to be the main game-modes available in Battlefield Portal, which features pre-programmed and reimagined experiences of the classic games. 40+ weapons, 30+ gadgets and 40+ vehicles will be featured from all three theatres of war – and can be mixed and matched as the players choose!
The seven fractions from these classic games, including The US, UK, Germany 1942, and the US and Russia fractions from Bad Company 2! While Battlefield Portal will feature 2042’s specialists, it will also support Battlefield 3‘s Support, Engineer, Assault and Recon roles!
The Master Builder
Finally, the Builder Tool is what makes all of this possible in Battlefield Portal. While players can’t alter the maps themselves, it seems almost everything else can – including the game logic itself!
Players will entirely control the maps and modes, available fractions, weapons, gear and more for custom games! They can even change the conditions for victory and the player’s ability can go prone or use ADS, for example. But, based on the craziness seen in the trailer, things are about to get bonkers!
To The Future We Go
Battlefield 2042 is set to release on October 22nd, 2021, with the Battlefield Portal mode included. The standard edition is $60 on PC, Xbox One and Playstation 4. Meanwhile, it is $70 on Xbox Series X|S and Playstation 5!
That’s not all though, the second mode titled “Hazard Zone” has yet to be revealed! While not much is known, we know that it’s a high-stakes squad-based game type never seen before in the Battlefield franchise. It has also been confirmed not to be a Battle Royale mode.
