Bungie is now considered an independent studio, taking their recent franchise with them, Destiny.
Activision and Bungie entered a publishing agreement in 2010, where Activision would take care of publishing Bungie’s newest franchise, Destiny. This led to more than 50 Million games (and expansions) being sold, contributing to massive success for the studio.
“We have enjoyed a successful eight-year run and would like to thank Activision for their partnership on Destiny. Looking ahead, we’re excited to announce plans for Activision to transfer publishing rights for Destiny to Bungie. With our remarkable Destiny community, we are ready to publish on our own, while Activision will increase their focus on owned IP projects.”
Before Destiny, Bungie was known for their work on numerous projects, with the most notable being Halo, an intellectual property of Microsoft. The studio developed Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST & Halo: Reach before the series was moved onto newly founded 343 Industries. Many of Bungie’s core staff moved on to 343 to continue developing the Halo franchise, while some stayed behind to work on Bungie’s future projects.
Given that Bungie retained the rights to publishing Destiny, it is safe to assume that the studio is already hard at work in developing more content, perhaps, another title in the series. At this time, the future of the studio is unclear, but in their blog post, they did mention they have “new adventures” on the horizon.
Destiny 2 is available for the Xbox One, Playstation 4, and PC.
