JRPG’s are unique genre. It varies so wildly in style and environment, but usually the stories follow the same patterns. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as tropes are used in every genre, but it can be a little exhausting.
Enter Cris Tales, which looks to shake things up a bit. The graphical choice/art direction alone is enough to inspire a sense of difference. Better yet, it uses Time in what looks to be an interesting way, as opposed to just narrative background.
If I Could Turn Back Time…
Players will control Crisbell, a “newly-awakened Time Mage” and battle against the Time Empress throughout Crystallis and other kingdoms.
As “a love-letter to classic JRPG’s” it will feature “branching stories, innovative combat, and classic RPG gameplay.” So think of classics like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI, or modern games like Bravely Default, says the developers Dreams Uncorporated, and SYCK.
Players will use their time powers to go back and forth in time to alter the timeline; the world will shift according to your whims. The combat uses the old-school turn-based style, where the player can synchronize attacks and use time abilities to bolster their forces.
Like any JRPG, the game is only worth what the in-game world offers. Cris Tales looks to continue the process with a large world to explore and interesting characters to recruit. How do you explore this world? By boat and airship, of course!
For those who like physical copies, there is a collector’s poster with each disc. There is also a Collector’s Edition that comes with an enamel pin set, a plushie, a sticker sheet, a lenticular print, an art book and some digital content.
Cris Tales will release for the Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Google Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X on July 20th, 2021.
