After quite a lengthy wait, zombie lovers can finally get their hands on Dead Island 2, which releases today on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC!
The saga of getting Dead Island 2 across the finish line has been a long and complicated one. Seemingly plagued with issues from the start, before even being announced, Techland had been in talks to develop the game until ultimately abandoning ship in order to focus their efforts on what would become Dying Light. By the time the game was officially announced at E3 2014, Yager Development had come aboard and begun production, with early gameplay footage being available at Gamescom that same year. The original Q2 2015 release date came and went, and in July 2015, Deep Silver broke the silence, stating that they were no longer working with Yager Development on Dead Island 2 or any other game for that matter. Yager Development’s closure and dissolution were announced shortly after Deep Silver acknowledged that they had parted ways.
Deep Silver insisted that the game was still in development and had not been shelved. In 2016 it was confirmed that Sumo Digital would be the new team working on the game, which was followed by three long years of seeming dormancy. In 2019- five years after the game’s announcement, four years after its initial release window, and four development teams later- the game finally made its way into the hands of Dambuster Studios, an internal team at Deep Silver who would finally give us the finished product releasing today!
Dead Island 2 will breathe some new air into the franchise by seemingly taking the “island” out of the equation completely. Dead Island 2 comes stateside, specifically taking place during a violent resurgence of the original infection, which has left the state of California in a quarantine zone. It turns out the quarantine isn’t quite as airtight as the military and government might want the civilians to believe and that those meant to be enforcing the quarantine may not be as benevolent as they present themselves to be. As with all Dead Island games, things go awry, and you ultimately do wind up encountering your familiar zombie adversaries in what was once considered one of the few remaining safe havens from infection. You didn’t think they’d take the “dead” out of the franchise, too, did you?!
Hack, slash, rage, and craft your way through the familiar streets of Los Angeles and the bay area with your team of slayer companions in Dead Island 2. Available now on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC!
