Do you want to “hack into death’s despair“? That’s the premise behind a new game from Idea Factory International and Compile Heart. A mash-up of horror and RPG elements, this game should be on the radar of anyone who enjoys either. Death end re;Quest 2 releases in 2020, and you’ll be able to play it on PC and PlayStation 4.
Mai Toyama is newly enrolled at Wordsworth, an all-girl dormitory in La Choara. At night the town fills with Shadow Matter, a “horrific group of menacing creatures.” This, of course, isn’t even the worst part. The town is also her sister’s last-known location.
The game will revolve around the player investigating the mysteries of the town and the sister’s disappearance. The scenario writer for the Corpse Party series (Makoto Kedouin) and the character designer of the original Death end re;Quest (Kei Nanameda) team up deliver this sequel.
With a new game come new features– Overkill is now an option. Players can “stack damage beyond the health of an enemy for bonus experience.” A Berserker is also present. When he appears randomly, the player must escape his area of attack. Those who don’t will be killed instantly; to live, either run away or defeat all other monsters on the battlefield.
A day/night cycle exists, where during the day the gameplay is akin to a visual novel, where at night it turns into a turn-based RPG. Finally, the Knockback system is back– only now you can combo by flinging the Shadow Matter to other members of the party.
The game, which already released in Japan in February, will come to the West in Summer 2020, both physically and digitally for PC and Playstation 4. The Steam version includes the original Death end re;Quest Glitch costumes and subtitles for English, Japanese, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese.
