There aren’t many first-person shooters that try for the low-brow satirical edge anymore. Duke Nukem was a mainstay in the early 3D era, and the new Wolfenstein games could be placed there. Duke Nukem hasn’t had a release since the launch of Duke Nukem Forever, and Wolfenstein takes itself too seriously.
That leaves one first-person shooter franchise to rake the reins and run that edgy horse right off of a cliff– and that franchise is Shadow Warrior. Luckily, the developers at Flying Wild Hog and Devolver Digital have announced Shadow Warrior 3.
How Lo Can You Go?
Continuing the story from the first two games, players will once again control the “fallen corporate shogun” Lo Wang. The third game will task Lo Wang and his sidekick with an “improbable mission to recapture an ancient dragon”, in order to defer the apocalypse. “All it will take is the mask of a dead god, a dragon’s egg, a touch of magic, and enough firepower to tear down the encroaching Shadowlands.” Sounds easy enough, right?
The developers haven’t been resting on their laurels. Shadow Warrior 3 will have new features, besides making sure that “fast-paced gunplay sequences, razor-sharp melee combat, and spectacular free-running movement” are all adrenaline-pumping. For fans of the series, the developers have kept you in mind. They said that they “hope [it] will feel like a homecoming”, while new players get introduced to the quick-witted hero. They’ve also added a grappling hook. Why? As stated in the press release it “is a very subtle nod to the universal truth that grappling hooks make everything better.”
Shadow Warrior 3 will show a gameplay trailer at this year’s Devolver Direct on July 11th, 2020. As for the first two Shadow Warrior games, they are on sale on Steam at 75% off the original price.
