The BBC and Reality Game Group are realising an online collectible card game (CCG) based series Doctor Who. Doctor Who: Worlds Apart is a new take on the online card game genre, to rival that of Hearthstone and Magic The Gathering in its own unique way.
Interestingly, what makes Doctor Who: Worlds Apart is the fact that cards are truly owned by players. The cards themselves are tradeable on a marketplace using the Ethereum network.
Despite this, the game is still not pay-to-win according to developers. In fact, they insist the trading market allows players to purchase only the cards they need rather than resorting to chance in the form of packs.
Furthermore, the gameplay of Doctor Who: Worlds Apart is unique to itself and isn’t strictly the same as its competitors. In the video below, it demonstrates the thematic board showing off interactions between creatures and companions fighting. Creatures and companions are the common ways of dealing damage, with companions being notable creatures from the show itself.
In addition, the ‘moment’ card shows a game changing effect that can quickly change the tempo of the game. Moment effects can be both good or bad but are certain to be powerful.
Doctor Who: Worlds Apart is set to release in 2021, according to the website. The game itself is free, with card packs available for purchase now from the website, and the marketplace for trading cards opening with the release of the game.
