Going into Square Enix’s press conference, we don’t expect a truckload of announcements, but rather, more detail about their upcoming titles, including Kingdom Hearts III, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Dragon Quest XI. Sadly, we really didn’t get a lot of new information regarding Square Enix’s lineup, besides minor updates to already existing series such as Final Fantasy XIV Online and Just Cause 4, which was leaked prior to the weekend.
A gameplay trailer for Shadow of the Tomb Raider shown a brief look at the game’s dark gameplay, featuring unique assassinations for her unwitting enemies. According to the game developers, Shadow of the Tomb Raider will feature the series’ “biggest hub” and will contain many more surprises as we see more unveiled in days to come.
Capcom is collaborating with Square Enix to introduce Final Fantasy XIV Online x Monster Hunter World, presumably a new online RPG event coming to platforms this Summer. A self-published collaboration was announced for the mobile game Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius, with Dragon Quest content added in the coming weeks.
We saw a quick look at The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit, Octopath Traveller, Nier: Automata, and Kingdom hearts III, but we didn’t hear anything else regarding these titles that hasn’t already been announced. Just Cause 4 had a moment during their press conference, announcing that the game’s grapples are stronger, and can be used in greater quantities. Enemies are promised to be more intelligent than prior games, offering up a challenge for unsuspecting players, but beyond that, we didn’t hear much more about Just Cause 4.
Platinum Games has a new game in development called Babylon’s Fall. This title appears to be inspired by a land of mythological creatures, and unique magical powers. Some fans have been quick to draw comparison’s to FromSoftware’s Dark Souls series, but based on second-glance, we aren’t quick to draw those conclusions ourselves. It is in development for the Playstation 4 and PC (Via Steam).
We got an official announcement for Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, arriving on September 4th, 2018 for the Playstation 4 and PC (Steam). Final Fantasy XIV Online is receiving a new content update later this year titled “Under the Moonlight”, again, with no information really announced for the expansion, including it’s release date.
Square debuted a new title called The Quiet Man, coming to Playstation 4 and Steam in 2019. The trailer showcased a deaf protagonist beating up thugs in an alley, with more information promised in August. The tagline for the game is “Silence Rings Loudest”.
Square Enix had a lackluster presentation, not last longer than 30 minutes and only two new game reveals: Babylon’s Fall and The Quiet Man. We didn’t receive a lot of information on these two new reveals, and the content we did see featured content shown at Microsoft’s Press Conference yesterday morning.
