There isn’t a huge market for VR yet, but its expanding rapidly. Sony has their headset for the PlayStation 4, and there’s the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive for PC, but it isn’t adopted by most gamers yet. However, a surprise today may change that. Ubisoft is bringing one of their flagship franchises to VR, and if it’s anything like its predecessors, it should be wild. Today, at Ubisoft Forward, FAR CRY VR: Dive Into Insanity was announced.
First, it isn’t coming to VR headsets that are in homes. That means none of the three listed above will receive the game as a release. It seems like a strange move, unless they plan to port it over later, but you’ll have to travel to experience it. The game will be exclusive to Zero Latency, a VR arcade chain with locations around the globe. There are 3 in the UK, 4 in Canada, and 9 in the United States (with a total of 45 locations in 22 countries). So you shouldn’t have to go too far if you live by a major city. You can check out locations in these and other countries here.
Villainous Vaas
Now, the best news of all– the game is a spin-0ff of Far Cry 3. Yes, that means Vaas Montenegro is back! The idea is that up to 8 players work together while marooned on an island with Vaas. Since this is Far Cry, you’ll shoot your way out. Zero Latency has said that “each session… will take approximately 30 minutes”, and that players can “walk around freely”. To do so, people will put on a backpack and a headset to immerse themselves in the world. As for the release date, it shouldn’t be much of a surprise: 2021.
So while it may not be how people wanted Vaas to return, but it should draw players anyway. You’ll be able to play it at Zero Latency sometime during 2021, but they have piqued my interest by having Far Cry: Dive Into Insanity announced now.
