GOG, digital distribution platform, has released the open beta for its new game client GOG Galaxy 2.0. Yes, this does mean that there will be yet another game client for you to add to your PC, but you can relax. Rather than add to the clutter of your desktop for all the games you may purchase on GOG.com, the client aims to consolidate all of your libraries from different clients into one.
It isn’t just the libraries themselves that the client aims to put in one place. You can make your friends list from any platform visible, as well as their activity in games you may take an interest in but haven’t gotten around to purchasing yet. Filters and favourite lists are also an offered feature, allowing you to narrow down those, “I don’t know what I want to play right now.” selections. Check out the introductory video below.
Fancy, right? I know I know, opening up a new client when you want to switch to a game offered by a different distributor isn’t exactly an arthritis-inducing nightmare, but if something can be made more convenient then why not do it? Not having to bounce from client to client to see which of your friends are online in which games is an added bonus as well. You could always just call them, but who does that these days?
After being announced in May, the client entered an invite-only testing phase a month later and has been updating and improving ever since. You can still download games individually if you prefer and install them one-by-one, but if you prefer only having to open up one client you can login to your Steam, Uplay, GOG, and Epic Games Store accounts from your PC, as well as your online console accounts (Xbox Live and Playstation Network).
You can download the new GOG Galaxy 2.0 client over at GOG, and clean up your desktop, dang-it! For more gaming news you can keep up to date at Informed Pixel.
