343 Industries has stated that Halo 5: Guardians will not support split screen gameplay.
One of Halo’s defining characteristics that allows friends and family to destroy each other in mayhem and squatting debauchery has ended. “The decision to remove split-screen support from Halo 5: Guardians was one of the most difficult ones we’ve ever had to make as a studio.” Wrote Josh Holmes, Studio head at 343 Industries. “We know that for many of our fans, Halo has meant playing together with friends in the same room. We all have great memories of past Halo split-screen multiplayer matches. To move Halo’s gameplay forward and deliver a true next-gen experience, tough choices had to be made.”
With a heavy emphasis on four-player co-operative play in Halo 5, we can only hope that split-screen support will come in a future patch, but this is sounding very unlikely. Many people have responded in anger and frustration over social media regarding the decision to remove split-screen gameplay as Halo 5 will mark the first-time a Halo game has not featured split-screen multiplayer of any kind.
Halo 5: Guardians is expected to launch exclusively for Xbox One on October 27th.
