Some movies are ripe for video-game adaptations, and I don’t mean the movie tie-ins that plagued video-games in the early 2000’s. Usually its a superhero game, or something with lots of action, like Mad Max. Which is what makes this announcement so strange.
The history…
Now a movie called Cannibal Holocaust is receiving a sequel in video-game form. Not only is this surprising because the movie, while a cult favorite, isn’t very well-known, but also due to the controversy surrounding its release in 1980. Directed by Italian Ruggero Deodato, Cannibal Holocaust is considered the first “found-footage” horror film.
Many people thought it was real; but to be fair, some of it is. The movie features scenes of animal torture, and was accused of being a snuff film. Deodato paid the actors to “disappear” for a year immediately following the release, only to have them called into court to ensure they still lived. The film, banned in several countries, eventually had alternate versions. However, the original, in which a crew travel to investigate a remote tribe, is still available.
The game…
Now there will be a game, a direct sequel to the movie, merely called Cannibal. Deodato is teaming up with Fantastico Studio for an interactive horror adventure. It will utilise the Unity engine, and the player will control several characters in the Borneo jungle. Deoadato said that “making the story interactive opens up many new possibilities”, and hopes “it will also help to bring young people closer to my narrative universe”.
He states that the themes that made his movie popular will remain, touching on “natives’ lives, told in its rawness, and cannibalism, powerful metaphors that reveal the most disturbing… impulses in our society.” So, considering the legacy of the film, it will have its share of gore. The squeamish may want to avoid this one. You can check out the reveal trailer below, though it really isn’t much.
It is set to release November 2020 for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and mobile devices.
