While April may be the month most gamers have their eyes on this year (in the first half of the month, anyway), March wasn’t without some good releases. The spread of the coronavirus has caused a lockdown in cities and towns globally. People have unexpected time on their hands. What better time to release your game– considering not as many people buy their copies physically anymore?
There are companies using the chance for benevolence, and others, who I won’t mention here but you’ve probably read about, are forging in the opposite direction. But here to distract you from all of the current events are a group of games you will not regret quarantining with. The games once again range across all genres and systems, so there should be something for everyone.
GAME OF THE MONTH– Half-Life: Alyx (PC)
It’s not too hard to pick this as game of the month. Not only is it receiving stellar reviews, its the first game in the Half-Life series in 13 years. That in and of itself is probably noteworthy enough, but the game is also one that uses Virtual Reality. There are assuredly those out there that would have preferred a Half-Life 3, but this will have to do for the time being. Unfortunately its only available for PC, and with VR at that.
FIRST RUNNER UP– Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Nintendo Switch)
Similar to February’s GotM, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is hard to describe. You move to an island, where you get to shape it to your liking while building your own house and furnishing it. Collect fish, bugs, tarantulas, fruit and sundry other items on your tropical paradise.
Befriend various animals that move to your island. Be prepared to invest a lot of time into this game though– the game runs on a real-world schedule, so waiting days for something to bear fruit is not uncommon.
SECOND RUNNER UP– DOOM Eternal (PC, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Google Stadia)
What is there to say about Doom that hasn’t already been said? For years, decades even, Doom has set a benchmark for first-person shooters. With as straight-forward a motivation as you can get (who doesn’t love slaughtering demons to metal music?), the game throws enemies at you at a gore-frenzied pace. You must keep on the move, blasting, chainsawing and burning anything else that tries to do the same.
