Marvel announced today that they are teaming up with Riot Games’ senior narrative designer/writer Odin Shafer to publish a series of League of Legends graphic novels. Beginning Wednesday, December 19 digital graphic novels will release on a monthly basis, concluding in a full-length graphic novel in May 2019. The December release will be an origin story titled LEAGUE OF LEGENDS: ASHE: WARMOTHER. Excessive use of colons aside, the title conveys all the information you need to bring you in.
If you’re anything like me, you have accidentally lost hours upon hours of your time not actually PLAYING LoL, but rummaging through the character lore and bios. Riot Games has always told compelling stories about their champions, and those stories have often impacted who I would choose as a champion to inevitably feed my brains out. Comic books are a wonderful fit as a medium for bringing more than just the summoners rift into vision. With the intertwining stories of the plethora of champions, there is no shortage of information needed to draw the world of Runeterra.
Ashe is one of the original champions available at game launch, so she is a perfect fit as focus for the first graphic novel release. It will focus on her role as leader of the Avarosan tribe of the Freljord and her struggles with “her mother’s fanatical expectations.” Alongside Shafer will be artist Nina Vakueva and lettering will be provided by Cardinal Rae.
I don’t know about you, but this news kind of makes me want to dust off the ol’ smurf account and go lose a bottom lane.
