The cloud gaming world may be changed forever with the announcement of Microsoft’s new 10-year contract partnership with Ukraine-based company Boosteroid.
In likely one of the most promising cloud gaming-based business moves we’ve seen- Microsoft just announced a 10-year contract with Ukraine-based company Boosteroid. Microsoft will be supplying the gaming catalogue, keeping in mind that Microsoft now owns Xbox Studios, Bethesda Game Studios, ZeniMax Online Studios, id Software, Arkane Studios, Machine Games, Tango Gameworks, Alpha Dog Games, and Roundhouse Studios. This puts a massive library on the table for Boosteroid while not considering the current hot topic of Microsoft’s pursuit of acquiring EA Games.
Games from Microsoft studios have notably been primarily absent from cloud gaming efforts, such as Amazon Luna and Google Stadia while having somewhat dabbled with the cloud gaming industry in the form of their Xbox Cloud Beta. To some, this seemed confusing as there seemed to be heavy discourse online about the success of the Xbox Game Pass service and the promise it could have if packaged somehow with a cloud gaming service.
It’s possible Microsoft was silently planning its own moves into the cloud gaming world all along. One can only hope that they’ve also spent this time watching and learning from the mistakes of previous cloud gaming service offerings.
It’s estimated that this partnership with Boosteroid could increase the number of players on some of Microsoft’s most popular franchises by well over 100 million. All of this- while also notably supporting a company that operates out of some of the most devastatingly affected areas of Ukraine.
Boosteroid’s operations are mainly based out of Kyiv and Kharkiv, two areas that have both experienced damage from recent missile attacks. Yet, the company seems to have not only transpired but expanded its reach throughout the turmoil. Boosteroid has maintained its servers in the US, UK, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Slovakia, Romania, Ukraine and Serbia while supporting service to gamers in the US, UK, and others across the European Union.
As announced on March 14, Microsoft will partner via a 10-year contract with Boosteroid for its first real foray into cloud-based gaming. Currently, neither Microsoft nor Boosteroid has given an estimated launch date for the service.
