Having announced that the PS4 has officially began to near the end of it’s life, Sony has made it very clear that the next big home console from the company will be made available soon. According to the Wallstreet Journal, John Kodera, head of PlayStation, is planning on devoting the next three years on development of the PlayStation 5.
The PlayStation 4 has seen record success with over 79 million units being sold since the console’s release in 2013. With such massive numbers it’s understandable that the company is expecting a slightly slower update cycle than they have shown before with the PlayStation 5 being slotted for a release in 2021. This makes it nine years between system releases, showing that while the end of the PlayStation 4 is nearing, it has lived a long and very fruitful life.
With Sony’s new CEO, Kenichiro Yoshida, releasing a 3 year business plan for the company’s progress toward the new system, it makes sense that he predicts a profit dip in the year 2021 for the company. This means that it is sensible that they company releases the latest in gaming technology around this time. This year it the company was able to make a $1.6 Billion, and it’s expected that profits fro 2021 will dip below this profit margin.
Having admitted that software and hardware sales are not the most stable, the company is planning on shifting their focus more onto online services and subscriptions.
Because of the long wait, it’s unlikely that we will hear all too much about the system in the foreseeable future, though closer to release Playstation fans and competitors can expect to have more information regarding the new system—meaning that while we would like to hear about it at E3 this year… we probably wont.
