The PlayStation 4 has had a great life so far— it has an exclusive suite of fantastic first-party games, it was once the place to go for Indie developers trying to get their games out in the wild, it didn’t treat its own customers with what some might have considered disdain, and last but not least, it was affordable, something Sony learned the hard way from the launch of the PlayStation 3. A little shot across Microsoft’s bow at the outset of the system’s release probably didn’t hurt either.
With Christmas 2018 come and gone, it’s a good time to take another glance at Sony’s sales numbers for its leading system. According to Sony, the holiday season saw them sell 5.6 million PlayStation 4’s, which pushed them up to the 91.6 million units sold globally. On top of that, Sony also stated that over 50.7 million games were sold for the PlayStation 4 during the holidays, bringing the total up to more than 876 million games sold.
Among those games, the fastest-selling exclusive title is Insomniac’s Spider-Man with over 9 million sold. And finally, it appears that the majority of those that own a PlayStation 4 have also opted in for the PlayStation Plus program, as it currently sits at slightly over 90 million monthly active users.
And the numbers for next year, from where we are now, look like they will only grow— the upcoming releases of Sony exclusives The Last of Us 2, Ghosts of Tsushima, Days Gone and Death Stranding will all bolster sales through the next year or two, ensuring that Sony will have a solid footing as they enter the next generation’s Colosseum.
Do you have a PlayStation 4? If so, did you get it during the 2018 holidays? Let us know in the comments!
