Well, it’s been a bit of a wait. Microsoft began unveiling components and abilities of its new system, the Xbox Series X, a while ago. Sony did a great job of hiding its cards until it felt ready to show them, and now that it has, the new Console Wars can begin. However, with the advent of cross-play, the division shouldn’t be quite so dramatic this time around.
Sony still hasn’t shown a picture of the PlayStation 5 console, so when it comes to aesthetic its anybody’s guess; but it’s probably safe to say it will be similar to their last 3 consoles– sleek, black and a variation of a rectangle. The presentation focused more on the development aspect of the new console, throwing around numbers and concepts I cant fathom.
So there won’t be any of that here– if interested, you can check out the presentation below. It’s about a little under an hour, and does a great job of going into detail. If you just want a summary, I will do a quick break down of what was shown.
Mark Cerny, the system architect, showed off Sony’s vision for the future. The PlayStation 5 looks to keep improving in all the areas gamers care about– graphics, load times, immersion– and continue to bring what they’ve always brought to the table– great single-player games. Here are the raw specs showcased in the video:
- CPU: AMD Zen 2-based CPU with 8 cores at 3.5GHz (variable frequency)
- GPU: 10.28 TFLOPs, 36 CUs at 2.23GHz (variable frequency)
- GPU architecture: Custom RDNA 2.
- Memory interface: 16GB GDDR6 / 256-bit.
- Memory bandwidth: 448GB/s.
- Internal storage: Custom 825GB SSD
Now, what does that mean? Honestly, I have no idea. But reactions range from happy to disappointed, and everything in between. To me, it looks like it may be a repeat of the beginning of last generation, only on a slightly more even footing. Whichever console you choose, however, and whatever the reason, one thing is certain– you will have a great time with either Sony or Microsoft.
