The upcoming, controversial Sea of Thieves “death tax” update has been, well, killed. Joe Neate, Executive Producer of Sea of Thieves at Rare, announced the decision via Twitter.
The update would have added a feature where players would lose gold when respawning after a death. Its initial announcement was met with negative feedback, as PVP-related deaths are often impossible to avoid.
“Letting everyone know we’ve heard the feedback and the proposed ‘Death Cost’ in #SeaOfThieves is, well, dead. We messed up with the messaging around this, and it’s now gone. Thanks for the honest feedback & discussion on this,” Neate said in a tweet.
The company said the decision was never going to impact PVP-related deaths, but opted to remove the feature from the upcoming patch entirely.
Sea of Thieves is currently available on Xbox One and Windows PC. Players can sail the seas with friends, collecting treasures and fighting other pirates and skeletons along the way.
