Despite receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews on Steam shortly after Ready or Not launched into early access, developer Void Interactive and publisher Team17 have mutually agreed to part ways. Due to a controversial topic, the game and its developer are under some fire. VOID Interactive posted to their Twitter account on December 20th, 2021, stating that both companies have agreed that this was the most beneficial route.
This decision externally seems to stem from damage control in response to developer Void Interactive re-voicing their plans for a school shooting based mission. There have been no public communications from the former publisher Team17.
The Official Statement
The developer VOID Interactive posted an official statement to their Twitter on December 23rd, 2021, on the “school level” topic. While voicing that Ready or Not “in no way intends to glorify cowardly criminal acts”, VOID Interactive also acknowledges the sensitivity of the subject matter.
Although understanding the weight of these decisions, VOID Interactive reaffirms its stance on delivering a certain level of authenticity and realism to its games. Afterwards, VOID Interactive wraps up their statement by mentioning their want to honour the memories of those who have responded to and been impacted by such tragedies.
Ready or Not is a tactical first-person shooter that places you in the shoes of a SWAT Commanding Officer. You are in charge of responding to and diffusing hostile and dangerous situations. VOID Interactive approached this with a realism first mindset by implementing a “rules of engagement” system comprised of information from Law Enforcement Agencies worldwide.
